What does "gold vermeil" actually mean?
Vermeil (say it "ver-may") is a specific, regulated standard — not a marketing word. Two things have to be true:
- The base is solid sterling silver — never cheap brass or zinc.
- The gold layer is thick — at least 2.5 microns. Ours is 18k.
That combination is what gives vermeil its warmth, weight and longevity. It's real gold and real silver, all the way through.

Does gold vermeil tarnish or fade?
Not easily — and not if you treat it kindly. The thick 18k gold layer protects the silver underneath, so vermeil holds its colour far longer than plated jewellery. The things that shorten any plated piece's life are water, sweat, perfume and friction, so a little care goes a long way (more on that below).
Is gold vermeil good for sensitive ears and skin?
For most people, yes. Because vermeil is built on a sterling silver base — not the cheap base metals used in costume jewellery — it's a popular choice for anyone whose skin reacts to fast-fashion earrings. If you have a known metal allergy, it's always worth checking first.
How to make your gold vermeil last
The golden rule: last thing on, first thing off.
- Put jewellery on after perfume, moisturiser and hairspray.
- Take it off before swimming, showering, the gym and sleep.
- Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wearing.
- Store each piece in a soft pouch, away from sunlight and other jewellery.
