The short answer: If jewellery irritates your skin, the base metal is usually the cause. Cheap pieces use nickel-heavy base metals that react with skin. Gold vermeil is different: it's real gold over a sterling silver base, which is far gentler. That's what we use at Good Goods.
Why some jewellery irritates skin
Reactions usually come down to the metal underneath. Many cheap pieces use base metals like nickel, which a lot of people react to.
Thin gold plating wears away fast, exposing that base metal to your skin. That's when the redness and itching start.
Why gold vermeil is gentler
Vermeil has to be built on sterling silver to be called vermeil. Sterling silver is far kinder to sensitive skin than the base metals in fast-fashion jewellery.
On top sits a thick layer of real gold, at least 2.5 microns. So you get gold you can wear and a base that's gentle.
What to look for if you react to jewellery
Choose pieces with a known base metal. Sterling silver or solid gold are the safest. Avoid unmarked, very cheap pieces where you can't tell what's underneath.
Our pieces are 18k gold vermeil over sterling silver, so you always know what's against your skin.
Caring for it so it stays gentle
Keep your jewellery dry and away from perfume and lotion. That protects the gold layer, which keeps the gentle base covered. See our care guide.
